Tippy Canoe and Paddling Too

Tippy Canoe
On my first day of SUUSI we went out canoeing on the most peaceful, clear river that I have seen for some time: the New River. The water was mostly flat, with some eddies, and the river was so clear that one could see fish on the bottom. We canoed out to a shoal, while learning all about wide swings, draw strokes, J-strokes, ruddering, and a number of other canoeing strokes to help us keep canoeing where we want and not get grounded. At the shoal, the instructor tipped over our canoes, one by one, as in the above picture, to see if we can get the canoes back up right by using a special "slap" stroke. We then paddled on back after having been out on the sunny river all afternoon.
