Ingathering

Ingathering at SUUSI 2007 was one of the most dramatic I have seen. We gathered together in Payne Quad and marched across the drillfield (upper left). But we did so silently, in tribute to the 33 people who died on 2007 April 16 in the Virginia Tech Massacre. We then turned around and marched solemnly around the candles representing those who died that day. While we were doing this, a loud clap of thunder came out of a seemingly unthreatening sky, as though it was part of the ceremony. To me this thunder motif continued throughout SUUSI. We then went inside Burruss (upper right) , where we had the parade of banners as well as some cheerleading and singing from the staff and performers, including Kym Tuvim. We then went outside and held our Opening Circle (lower right), towards the dormitories because of the memorial. Michael Ivey went backwards through the opening circle with his video camera; this is his result.
