Theme Talks and Worship

The theme talks were unusually good this year. Rev. Melanie Morel-Sullivan wanted Boston to marry New Orleans (and have a child named Savannah, GA) and says that our religious group should be more like New Orleans and Mardi Gras in spirit. Rev. Maj-Britt Johnson on Tuesday considered the prospect of dying. Rev. Suzanne Meyer on Wednesday says that failure is an essential component of success and urges us to disengage from our win/lose culture. Steve Crump, who performed at Monday night's Cabaret, gave us a talk on Thursday in which an old man says "Love is like a bird that flies." But on his death bed, he says "or maybe not." His main point was that flying involves relationships, which seems strange until you realize that to fly, you have to fly above something - land; there is a relationship between sky and land, between Uranus and Gaia. He concluded with a latin piece that had us dancing in the hallways.

Once again, as in 2001 and as in most previous SUUSIs, Alexis Jones got up on stage with his guitar and led us through a singing of Hymn 312, "Let it Be a Dance".
